In honor of National Cancer Survivors Day, Maimonides Medical Center honored cancer survivors and patients on Tuesday, June 28, with a celebration at Dyker Beach Golf Club (1030 86th Street).

Calling the occasion Cancer Survivors Day, attendees celebrated the milestones achieved by survivors and patients, and acknowledged the family members, friends, and healthcare professionals who have supported them along the way.

Welcoming remarks were given by Ken Gibbs, Maimonides President & CEO; Dominick Stanzione, Executive Vice President and COO; and the Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz.

“Our Cancer Survivors Day event is an amazing reunion of our patients who have battled and beaten cancer, and the incredible doctors who were with them every step of the way,” said Gibbs. “The hundreds of survivors here today speak to both the wonderful spirit of our patients and the excellent quality of care we provide at Maimonides.”

Highlights of the celebration included a live band comprised of Maimonides physicians and cancer survivors and special video presentation recognizing Maimonides Cancer Center survivors and medical staff.

Two cancer survivors, Yee Chin and Bridget Leggio — both of Bensonhurst — were honored as “Survivors of the Year” during a special awards ceremony,

“It is an honor to be named a Survivor of the Year by the Maimonides Cancer Center. I had cancer three times, and was treated and supported by an entire team of specialists,” said Leggio. “Thanks to the world-class care and truly remarkable support system that Maimonides provided me, I’m here today with my family, friends, and community.”

Chin echoed Leggio’s sentiment.

“It brings me great joy to be recognized as a Survivor of the Year and to celebrate this day with loved ones and fellow survivors,” she said. “I am extremely grateful for the support and wonderful care I received from everyone at Maimonides. Today, we all celebrate the milestones we have achieved in our battles against cancer.”
