Briefly Noted: Missing Eggs, Historic Districts & More
- D, N, and R subway service was delayed on Wednesday after a construction worker fell onto the tracks at the 53rd Street station in Sunset Park. Emergency crews took the worker to NYU Langone Hospital where he is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
- Dozens of Sunset Park residents testified at a Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing on Tuesday in support of designating four areas in the neighborhood Historic Districts—Sunset Park North, Central Sunset Park, Sunset Park 50th Street, and Sunset Park South. The Gowanus Landmarking Coalition has been working to have several sites in Gowanus designated landmarks while preservationists in Prospect Heights have been campaigning to designate an area with 82 historic buildings the “Prospect Heights Apartment House District.”
- The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a proposal for a new protected bike lane around the perimeter of Prospect Park on Ocean Avenue but some are against the plan’s removal of more than 60 trees. In a similar story, the Friends of Fort Greene Park have filed a lawsuit against the city demanding to see the environmental review for plans to remove 58 healthy trees from Fort Greene Park to make way for a plaza.
- The measles outbreak continues to spread in Brooklyn. Three Sunset Park residents were recently infected, bringing the total to 466 measles cases in the borough.
- P.S. 107 parents are helping to escort third-graders to gym class after a resident of the Park Slope Women’s Shelter on 8th Avenue reportedly cursed at and spat on a teacher.
- Brooklyn-based artist Duke Riley has created a new mural for Fort Defiance depicting the “maritime aspect of the Battle of Brooklyn.” The artwork commemorates the Red Hook bar’s 10th anniversary.

- A thief recently stole a nest filled with 7 swan eggs from Prospect Park. Interfering with wildlife in parks is a misdemeanor punishable by a $1,000 fine or 20 days in jail.
