A Tree Grows on Fourth Ave
Of Park Slope’s main thoroughfares, 4th Ave gets the short end of the stick (and historical property values show it always has). But Fourth on Fourth Avenue (FOFA), a project of the Park Slope Civic Council, now entering its second year of 4th Ave advocacy, is working to change that. One of the group’s first goals was to give the avenue a green makeover. Now, a new “mini-grant” from the city’s MillionTreesNYC program is putting them one step closer to a healthier (economically, environmentally, aesthetically…) 4th Ave.
The $700 will help the committee maintain the trees they’ve already got between Bergen and Carroll, with a particular focus on 13 young trees that need some extra nurturing. They’ll also work with new adopters of neighborhood tree beds, outfitting them with inexpensive tree guards and offering help with cultivation, planting, and tree maintenance.
Want to be one of those “new adopters”? On Saturday, with the help of Arias Park Slope, FOFA will be kicking off the various programs funded by the grant with a community gardening day, which means that in addition to getting down and dirty (they’ll have tools and gloves on hand), it’s your chance to learn how to request or adopt a tree in front of your home or business. The greening starts at 12:30 and goes till 4.
