NYPD Chief Gerald Nelson was met with warm farewells at the January meeting of the 88th Precinct Community Council — his last as commanding officer of NYPD Patrol Borough Brooklyn North (PBBN), which oversees the 10 precincts in northern Brooklyn.

Nelson, 62, is retiring from the force after 41 years, first in the city Housing Police Department and then rising through the ranks and serving in various bureaus (such as Transit for the Bronx, Housing for the Bronx and Queens, and Personnel Services) and boroughs. He eventually commanded the NYPD’s School Safety Division before coming to PBBN in December, 2006.

Asked what’s next for him, Nelson said he will “miss the camaraderie” of the job, but looks forward to traveling more.

88th Precinct Community Council President Delia Hunley-Adossa described Nelson as someone who “makes people feel” supported and protected.

His official day of retirement will be on his birthday, February 14. His replacement has not yet been decided/announced.
