A pair of vigilant New Yorkers may have prevented a shootout on the 2 train last night.

Ricardo Stewart, 37, of Fort Greene, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and menacing after straphangers spotted him bandying a loaded Smith & Wesson .38 at the Atlantic Avenue stop on Saturday, April 17, 7:05pm, according to police.

Police were conducting bag checks at the station, when they were first tipped off by a straphanger about the gun-wielding lunatic. Cops went to the platform and stalled the train, and a female passenger pointed out the perp out. Cops say he had a gun in his waistband.
