Where Were You During The 2003 Blackout?

Ten years ago today, on August 14, 2003, a power outage affected millions of customers across the northeast and midwest, including in New York City.

Neighbor Chris Kreussling, aka Flatbush Gardener, has a set of photos (including the one above) from that day, showing what a lot of people in our area probably remember most — a long walk home, followed by having some fun with neighbors out on the street that night. Neighbor Joe Enright’s list of things he did during the blackout includes some of that community fun, plus gems like “Crossed Coney Island Avenue without getting hit by cars.”

Unfortunately not everything was so calm. Though it was nothing compared to the 1977 blackout, there was looting reported in the city, including at a sneaker store in our 70th Precinct.

So where were you on this day in 2003, and what do you remember about it?
