Where Our Tap Water Comes From
If you’ve ever wondered about where the water coming out of your faucet originates, the New York Times recently posted a cool video about the three-month journey from our reservoirs upstate to the tap. It’s a pretty neat look at something we use every day (and we use lots of it — 60-70 gallons per person per day!).
And if you want to get an up-close and personal look at that water, we’d recommend keeping an eye on the calendar at South Slope-based Destination Backcountry Adventures, where neighbor David DiCerbo and his team take people on trips out of the city (the pick-up location is near the Atlantic Ave subway stop). This fall he teamed up with Upstate Adventure Guides for some fall paddles on the Pepacton reservoir, and it’s a rare treat to canoe on the water that we will eventually drink. The season for paddling on the reservoirs has closed, but check back in the spring!
