What’s Open, Closed & Brunchy On New Year’s Day

Have a fun, joyous, and safe New Year’s Eve everybody! And when you wake up tomorrow hoping for a big plate of pancakes, a bottle of painkillers, or your mail to be delivered, here’s what you’ll need to know about what’s open, closed, or running on a different schedule:

Government Offices, Parking, and Sanitation

Government offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, are closed. Courts are also closed. There is no mail delivery.

Public schools are closed for winter break, and will reopen on Thursday, January 2.

On Wednesday, January 1, alternate side parking is suspended. You don’t need to pay parking meters. No stopping, no standing and no parking regulations are suspended except where those regulations are in effect seven days a week or at all times.

There is no garbage or recycling pick-up. If Wednesday is your regular garbage or recycling collection day, put your items out after 4pm Wednesday evening.

Subways and Buses

New York City subways and buses and the Staten Island railway will operate on a Sunday schedule (which means no B train), with longer waits on some bus routes on January 1. For NYE travel info, see this post.

Libraries

All branches of the Brooklyn Public Library will be closed on Wednesday, January 1.

YMCA

Both the Prospect Park (357 9th St) and Armory (361 15th St) YMCA will be open on New Year’s Eve, but only from 7am-3pm. But good news for all those with fitness resolutions — they will be open on January 1 from 8am-8pm.
