Weekend Events Recap: What’s Happening Around South Slope


Still looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from craft fairs to Star Wars trivia, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here’s a recap of some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood.

Prospect Park Craft Fair
When: Saturday, May 3, 10am-5pm
Where: Bartel Pritchard Lot, 15th Street and PPW, Prospect Park
What: Find a cool Mother’s Day gift from local artists and crafts people, socialize, and support Windsor Terrace elementary school PS 154 – part of the proceeds raised from the event are donated to help support the arts and enrichment programs at the school.
How much: Free

Park Slope Parents Clothing Swap
When: Saturday, May 3, 10am-noon
Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street
What: Bring clean, gently used toddler, big kid clothing, books, maternity items, strollers, etc. (but no toys!) to swap, and then you can look through other people’s items, organized by size and gender when possible, and you take as much as you brought. And see additional Spring Fling events taking place on Saturday here!
How much: $5 for members of Park Slope Parents, and $10 for non-members.

Secrets Of Prospect Park Tour
When: Saturday, May 3, 12pm
Where: Meet at the Prospect Park entrance at Prospect Park West and Union Street
What: Join Forgotten New York for a 3-hour romp through what Olmsted and Vaux, the creators of Central Park, considered their finest achievement.
How much: $15 for members of the Greater Astoria Historical Society, $20 for everyone else. RSVP: info@astorialic.org or 718-278-0700.

History In Your Hands: Fleece Fun
When: Saturday and Sundays through May 31, 2pm to 4pm
Where: Prospect Park Lefferts Historic House
What: Ever wondered how wool was used on a Colonial farm? Visit Lefferts House weekends in May to brush wool with carding paddles, spin yarn using a drop spindle, and even make a felt ball to take home with you. Ewe won’t want to miss it!
How much: $3 suggested donation

Story Time With Frann Preston-Gannon
When: Sunday, May 4, 11:30am
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: Join the author and illustrator of Hot Dog, Cold Dog for a fun time for kids ages 3-7.

Let The Wookiee Win: A Star Wars Quiz
When: Sunday, May 4, 7pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: If you’ve spent the past couple of days geeking out over the official Star Wars: Episode VII cast announcement, there’s only one place you need to be on Sunday. The folks fromGeeks Who Drink are once again bringing their nerdy trivia to Supercollider, and this time, it’s all about those who use and abuse the force. The quiz will focus on the original trilogy, but there will be one question on the holiday special, which you can watch here. Teams are limited to six players, and the more people that come, the larger the prize pot, so come one, come all. May the Fourth be with you.
How much: $5 per person

Hot Time For A Cool Planet
When: Sunday, May 4, 6:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Get to know the Green Party’s candidate for governor, Howie Hawkins, at Freddy’s this Sunday. Look for music from Lowlark, Hayride Casualties, and a climate haiku competition.
How much: Free
