Weekend Events Recap: What’s Happening Around South Slope
Still looking for something to do this weekend? We’ve got a lot coming up in the neighborhood, whether you’re looking to stock up on clothes or books, you’re interested in doing a bit of community spring cleaning, or you’re hoping to get the kids outdoors and digging in the dirt. Kids Against Cancer’s First Annual Clothing Sale
When: Saturday, April 26, 9am-12:30pm
Where: PS 372 The Children’s School, Whitwell Place, between 1st Street and Carroll Street
What: Feel great about some spring shopping at Saturday’s Kids Against Cancer clothing sale. For $20, you’ll receive an empty bag that you can fill with new and gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories for both adults and children. Higher end items will also be available for individual purchase in the sale’s “boutique” section. 10% of the money raised will go to the Children’s School, and the rest will benefit the upcoming Hope and Hero’s Children’s Cancer Fund Walk, chaired by South Slope neighbor Patty Cavallo. Park Slope Library Book Sale
When: Saturday, April 26, 10am-5pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: No worries if you couldn’t make it to the preview sale, there will be plenty of books, DVDs and more to go around on Saturday as the official 2014 Park Slope Library book sale kicks off. Come out, grab a few new novels, and support our neighborhood branch.
How much: Free
Beautify New Voices
When: Saturday, April 26, 1pm
Where: 18th Street entrance to New Voices Middle School, between 6th and 7th Avenues
What: Earlier this month, we reported that New Voices MS 443 won a $1,000 Love Your Block Grant, and the time has come to put that money into action. Join the school community and neighbors on Saturday afternoon to help clean up 18th Street. Volunteers will have an opportunity to participate in tree care workshops, spruce up the tree pits on 18th Street, erect new planters at the school’s entrance, and plant flowers. History In Your Hands: Spring Sprouts
When: Saturday and Sundays through April 27, 2pm to 4pm
Where: Prospect Park Lefferts Historic House
What: It’s the last weekend for spring sprouts at Lefferts Historic House. Bring the kids out to help prepare their potato plot for planting. Participants will also have an opportunity to bring their own planted seedling home.
How much: $3 suggested donation
Spring Civic Sweep
When: Saturday, April 26, 10am-2pm
Where: Meet at J.J. Byrne Playground, 5th Avenue at 4th Street
What: Join your neighbors to spruce up our streets! From tree care to picking up litter to graffiti removal, there’s something everyone in the family can help with, and you can grab tools and head to our end of the nabe if you have a particular place you’d like to tackle. There will also be electronics recycling, free milkweed plants (to attract butterflies!), refreshments, and live music.
Farewell Sweet Dottie
When: Sunday, April 27, 1pm
Where: 15th Street entrance to Prospect Park
What: Join neighbors Brett and Ashley Affrunti as they bring the neighborhood together to say goodbye to Dottie the dog, who was tragically struck by a van on April 16.
How much: Free
