Black ArtStory: Remembering Rodeo Caldonia

What: Take an insightful look at women artists of the black Brooklyn renaissance of the 1980s and 1990s, as profiled in Brooklyn Boheme, the recent HBO documentary by Nelson George. What: Van Ness and MOR create heartfelt, hook-laden rock ‘n’ roll with a subtle funk influence. Catchy guitar riffs, groove-inducing bass lines, and smooth sax provide a melodic backdrop for Van Ness’ socially conscious lyrics.

Story Time: Michele Wong McSween

What: Brooklyn author McSween presents her Gordon & Li Li series, just in time for Chinese New Year! Gordon & Li Li are cousins. Gordon is from Brooklyn, New York and Li Li is from Beijing, China. The cousins are so excited to learn about each other’s cities, but Gordon speaks English and Li Li speaks Mandarin! Join the duo on their adventures in counting and bonding over animals. McSween will share “hong bao” (lucky red envelopes) for the New Year, and then lead kids in a coloring activity. Ages 3 to 8.

Shape Up! NYC Aerobics Class

Tipsy Vodka Distillery Tour

What: Join Tipsy for a visit to Industry City Distillery in Sunset Park. We’ll learn how they make their special beet sugar vodka, taste some new mixologist wares and take home our very own sipping beakers.

VitFriends: NY Chapter Vitiligo Support Group

Black Artstory – These Hands Built: A Musical Performance and Art Installation
When: Saturday, February 21 from 5-6pm
Where: BLDG 92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard at 63 Flushing Avenue
What: The experimental music group Hot Hands will present a live performance inspired by the histories of former African American workers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Incorporating live instruments, samples, and vocals; the ensemble will interpret and transform environmental soundscapes, music from the 1940s, and the words of those who worked in the Yard as an homage to the Brooklyn Navy Yard as both space and historical catalyst. Performance length approx. 30 mins.

Mardi Gras and Carnival Party

What: Carnival of Brazil & Mardi Gras of New Orleans are honored with food, drink, music and colorful stuff.

BAMcafe Live: Revolutionary Snake Ensemble
When: Saturday, February 21 at 9pm
Where: BAMcafe at Peter Jay Sharp Building at 30 Lafayette Avenue
What: Acclaimed improvisational brass band the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble unleashes a Mardi Gras extravaganza. Sporting crazily colorful costumes, the ensemble—led by alto saxophonist and flutist Ken Field (also of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic)—mixes the exuberant sounds of a New Orleans street band with the thrilling free jazz experimentation of Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman. The result is a glorious musical mélange guaranteed to get audiences moving.
