Remember how the subways are being unhelpful this weekend for out-of-Slope travel? We’ve rounded up a bunch of things to do in the neighborhood, all free or cheap, so you don’t have to deal with that misery.

Electronics Recycling
When: Saturday, October 19, 10am-4pm
Where: J.J. Byrne Playground, 5th Avenue between 3rd & 4th Sts
What: From computers to cell phones to printers and everything in between, we know you’ve got something stashed in a closet to drop off at this event. Everyone who brings something for recycling will be entered for a chance to win a MacBook Air!
How much: Free!

Walking Tour of Murals in Gowanus
When: Saturday, October 19, 11am
Where: Meet at Groundswell, 540 President St
What: Head to Gowanus to see what murals are up in the neighborhood on a tour led by staff from Groundswell, a community mural-making organization.
How much: Free!

Gowanus Open Studios
When: Saturday, October 19 & Sunday, October 20, 12-6pm
Where: Smith St to 5th Ave, Bergen St to 13th St
What: See pieces from more than 200 artists while exploring their workspaces during the annual open studios, and maybe even buy some art to bring home.
How much: Free!

Cookbook Tasting Series: Franny’s
When: Saturday, October 19, 4pm to 5pm
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue
What: A cookbook signing with food! Melissa Vaughan, author of The New Brooklyn Cookbook will prepare dishes from the cookbook Franny’s. Andrew Feinberg and Francine Stephens, authors and owners of our own Franny’s will also be on hand to sign copies of their book.

Where: Gowanus Canal Conservency Salt Lot, 2 2nd Avenue
What: A MillionTreesNYC tree giveaway – you can reserve a tree online now, where you can choose between four trees. Or, you can just show up and see what’s available.

Violeta Went to Heaven
When: Sunday, October 20, 5pm
Where: Barbès, 376 9th Street
What: A screening of the unconventional biography of Violeta Parra, a legendary multifaceted singer, songwriter, and founder of the socially and politically committed nueva canción folk music movement.
How much: $5 suggested donation
