Black Artstory Month

Where: Participating businesses along Myrtle Avenue, between Carlton and Classon Avenues

Comfort Dogs: Live From the Pink House”
When: February 25 through March 14
Where: JACK at 505 1/2 Waverly Avenue
What: Set in the skeleton of a pink hurricane-torn house a band of dogs walk around inside and try to make sense of humankind’s need for comfort as they read letters from the audience asking for solace. An ensemble of musicians and live dogs will howl, scratch and poop their way through an evening as they inadvertently ask the question: Who nurtures the nurturer? — Written and directed by Brooklyn-resident William Burke with beautiful music by Brooklyn composer Shane Chapman.

Story Time: Eric Shabazz Larkin

Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Larkin is a filmmaker, poet and artist, with a style inspired by Basquiat. His new book A Moose Boosh celebrates food: growing it, making it, slurping it and especially sharing it with loved ones at the dinner table. In these exuberant poems and “vandalized” photographs, readers meet a city kid who fantasizes about farming on a stoop, a girl with crumpets and crepes in her head, and a boy with a pet cabbage. There will be an accompanying food-related craft activity. Ages 3 to 8.

Black Artstory: New Negress Film Society presents “I Cried, Power!”

What: The New Negress Film Society presents an evening of digital media and live sound installation that re-imagines the concept of Afrofuturism in the wake of recent police violence in New York City and beyond. For our closing event, female-identified video and sound artists consider the realities of resistance and how revolutionary social movements can be built and sustained.

BAMcafe Live: Akie Bermiss Trio

What: Brooklyn-bred singer, keyboardist, and composer Akie Bermiss possesses a soulful voice that packs an emotional wallop. A staple of Brooklyn’s neo-soul scene, he performs with numerous local outfits, including Aabaraki, the Screaming Headless Torsos, hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari, and rapper Soul Khan, and has opened for George Clinton. With just his raw vocals and sparse keyboard accompaniment, he serves up an irresistible mélange of jazz, funk, and R&B.

What: Moozika! is a new lively interactive music class for children up to five years old, founded by Fort Greene singer/songwriter Jesse Goldman. Jesse will perform playful original songs from Moozika!’s upcoming debut garden-themed album The Golden Beets, as well as timeless kids’ classics that will be sure to get the crowd singing and dancing. Ages 6 weeks to 3 years.

Councilmember Laurie Cumbo’s State of the District Address

Where: Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway
What: First annual SOTD address about Cumbo’s “progress and vision for the 35th Council District.” The event will also serve to acknowledge the work of four leaders in the Brooklyn arts community: Ella Weiss, Karen Brooks Hopkins, Arnold Lehman, and Kwayera Archer-Cunningham.
