Weekend Art Events: September 28-October 1 (Questlove, Regatta, Chile Peppers & More)

September has come and gone and it’s starting to feel more like autumn. There’s lots happening this weekend to get you out of the house to enjoy the pleasant weather.

Celebrate Icelandic culture or Latino Heritage. Dance to tunes spun by Questlove and donate to Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria relief efforts. Or knock back some beers and help support Muddy Paws Rescue NYC who recently rescued over 100 dogs from shelters affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Taste of Iceland

What: Iceland Naturally celebrates the culture of magnificent Iceland with a four-day festival showcasing the Nordic nation’s food, music, art, film, and literature with events in and around Williamsburg.

The Great DUMBO Drop
When: Thursday, September 28, 5pm to 8pm, DUMBO Drop at 6pm sharp
Where: Washington Street between Front & Plymouth Streets, DUMBO
What: Thousands of toy elephants will parachute down from the rooftops onto the block party below to benefit two local schools—PS 307 and The Dock Street School. Learn more here.

What: Jonathan Berger and the Kronos Quartet’s emotional character study of U.S. Army pilot Hugh Thompson, Jr. (portrayed by tenor Rinde Eckert) who attempted to stop the 1968 South Vietnamese civilian massacre.

What: Catch the innovative NYC indie trio perform alongside Brooklyn duo Beacon and DJ/producer BEARCAT.

DJ Questlove 6 Hour Family Dance Party
When: Saturday, September 30, 12pm to 6pm (Doors open at 11:30am)
Where: Industry City, 220 36th Street (Courtyard 1/2), Sunset Park
What: 100% of admissions to this dance party will be donated to the St. John Rescue to assist with Hurricane Irma and Maria relief.
How Much: $10 suggested donation

Red Hook Regatta

What: Pioneer Works brings the innovative, homemade boat race back to Valentino Pier, this year launching Hope Floats, “an autonomous, interactive congressional calling device.” Learn more here.

Between the Folds Film Screening
When: Saturday, September 30, 2pm to 3:30pm
Where: BWAC Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, 481 Van Brunt Street (Door 7), Red Hook
What: Between the Folds tells the stories of ten fine artists and theoretical scientists who abandoned their careers to become modern–day paperfolders. The film premiered on PBS’s Independent Lens in 2009 and received a Peabody Award in 2010.

Strong Rope Loves Muddy Paws

Where: Strong Rope Brewery, 574 President Street, Gowanus
What: Meet some pups and drink some beer while supporting Muddy Paws Rescue NYC. Strong Rope will donate all proceeds of several beers to the non-profit rescue group who recently rescued over 100 dogs from shelters affected by Hurricane Harvey.
