Weekday Fun: The Best Events February 23-25

It’s another chilly week here in NYC, but there are plenty of events to warm you up in our neighborhood. From music and performances inspired by Emily Dickinson, to comedians talking books, to a theatrical drinking game, we’ve got some fun reasons to brave the cold:

Geoff Holtzman On The Causes And Effects Of Gender Discrimination In Philosophy
When: Monday, February 23, 7pm
Where: Central Library, InfoCommons Lab, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: The monthly series Brooklyn Public Philosophers presents Geoff Holtzman of the NYU Polytechnic Institute, who will discuss why philosophy is so male-dominated, and why it’s important that that changes.
How much: Free!

Two-Book Minimum
When: Tuesday, February 24, 8pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street
What: Join writer-comedian hosts Dan Wilbur and Ross Hyzer as they invite their favorite writer-comedians — this month, Matt Koff, Jordan Carlos, Dave Hill, and Giulia Rozzi — to do stand-up, tell stories, and shout a few drunken ramblings about their favorite books.
How much: $7, tickets available in advance.

TinyRhino: Unwritten Sequels
When: Tuesday, February 24, 8pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street
What: In this monthly theatrical drinking game, TinyRhino commissions six playwrights to write new plays, each including the same five dramatic elements. Guests will be given a list of these elements, which could show up at any time, in any order, and with any frequency. When they do show up, it means — you guessed it — drink!
How much: $10, tickets available in advance.

Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, February 25, 6-7pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free!

Author Talk: Brooklyn Spirits: Craft Distilling And Cocktails From The World’s Hippest Borough
When: Wednesday, February 25, 7pm
Where: Central Library, Brooklyn Collection, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Brooklyn-based author Peter Thomas Fornatale will share a mix of recipes and discuss local distilleries and the history of distilling in the borough, which is currently experiencing something of a renaissance.
How much: Free!

The Bushwick Book Club
When: Wednesday, February 25, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street
What: Hear music and see performances inspired by the work of Emily Dicksinson from Bob Holman, Susan Hwang, Leslie Graves, Susannah Pryce, Pearl Rhein, Thomas Wolfe, and Jia Jung.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
