Looking for something fun to do close to home this week? You won’t have to go far to enjoy some interesting events, from a talk on the brain, to a chance for free coffee, to a whole bunch of trivia. Details on those, and more:

Secret Science Club: The Future Of The Brain
When: Monday, December 15, 8pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street
What: Cognitive scientist and best-selling author Gary Marcus will be discussing some of the compelling topics from the new book he co-edited, The Future of the Brain: Essays by the World’s Leading Neuroscientists. Just don’t think about all the brain cells you’re sacrificing when you try one of the cocktails designed specially for the night.

Writing About Your Life With Donna Minkowitz
When: Tuesday, December 16, 7pm
Where: Central Library, InfoCommons Lab, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Are you struggling to tell you story? Award-winning memoirist Donna Minkowitz will teach the basics of memoir writing, harnessing emotions, senses, and storytelling.

Whole Foods Anniversary
When: Wednesday, December 17, all day
Where: Whole Foods Brooklyn, 3rd Avenue at 3rd Street
What: If you can get up early enough, the first 50 people through the door at 7am will get a free tote bag and coffee. If you can’t, then stop by later for specials, giveaways, a tour of the rooftop garden at 1pm (RSVP required), and a trivia night that starts at 7:30pm.

Film Screening: L.A. Confidential
When: Wednesday, December 17, 6:30pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: If you haven’t seen this 1997 film noir adaptation of the James Ellroy novel in a while, it’s worth revisiting, chock full of mystery, ambition, romance, humor, and Russell Crowe.

2014 Flashback Trivia-O-Rama
When: Monday, December 15, 7pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street
What: The Big Quiz Thing’s trivia night will wrap up 2014 in a neat little package, with questions on the most memorable events, personalities, entertainment, and more from the past year.
How much: $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
