Weekday Fun: The Best Events April 27-29

What: The monthly series Brooklyn Public Philosophers presents Frank Kirkland (Hunter College / CUNY Graduate Center) hosting a civil, reason-based, and open-minded discussion about race.

Memorial Concert For Trumpeter Wilmer Wise
When: Monday, April 27, 7pm
Where: Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, 58 7th Avenue
What: A memorial concert for legendary trumpeter Wilmer Wise, who passed away January 30, 2015, the free concert will feature: Ron Lipscomb (cello) performing the first movement of Bach’s Cello Suite #1; Wayne Dumaine (trumpet) performing “Pieces of Thoughts,” a solo piece written for Wilmer; Cecil Bridgewater (trumpet) performing “Tonight” from West Side Story; and Jimmy Owen (trumpet) performing “Sweet Gentle Lullaby” with Danny Mixon (piano) and David Williams (bass).

Union Hall Song Club

Brooklyn By The Book: Lawrence Wright In Conversation With George Packer
When: Tuesday, April 28, 7:30pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place
What: The author of Thirteen Days in September, which outlines how how peace was forged in 1978 between the enemies Israel and Egypt, will discuss the work with New Yorker writer George Packer.
How much:  $15 ($12 for Brooklyn Public Library and CBE members) and can be used toward a discount on Thirteen Days in September.

Haunting Renditions With Eliot Glazer
When: Tuesday, April 28, 8pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street
What: Excellent songs, excellently rendered by this Brooklyn comedian. As they say, it’s “an intimate night of bad music made good.” Also appearing is special guest Hasan Minhaj of The Daily Show.
How much: $10 in advance, $12 day-of.

Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, April 29, 6-7pm
Where: Prospect Park, Audubon Center
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.

Brooklyn Transitions Book Discussion: A Meaningful Life
When: Wednesday, April 29, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join neighbors for a series of book discussions focusing on the gentrification of Brooklyn. This week, the group will discuss L.J. Davis’s 1971 novel, A Meaningful Life, “a blistering black comedy about the American quest for redemption through real estate and a gritty picture of New York City in collapse.” Librarians have copies of the book if you don’t have your own, and refreshments will be provided.

Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz

Where: The Rock Shop, 249 4th Avenue
What: Teams of up to six players will compete for bar gift certificates and bragging rights, plus there are chances to win free pints (or gift-certificate equivalents) for answering five bonus questions throughout the evening, and there are some kinds of “bizarre prizes” for their weekly Bonus Email Question.
