Weekday Fun: The Best Events June 1-4

Start the month of June off right with some weekday fun in the neighborhood. Listen to some western swing, take in a free night of stand-up comedy, help kick off Celebrate Brooklyn, and find out about volunteer opportunities available in the area. The Brain Cloud
When: Monday, June 1, 7pm
Where: Barbés, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Spend your Monday with The Brain Cloud’s brand of western swing, which has the New Orleans-meets-Texas, strings-meet-horns, jazz-meets-country sound that is inspired by the great western swing musicians of the late 1930s and 1940s.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Night Train with Wyatt Cenac
When: Monday, June 1, 7:30pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street
What: Wyatt Cenac hosts this weekly show featuring comedy from the best local and international stand up comedians, and–at times–special guest appearances by musicians and local celebrities. This week’s special guest is Brooklyn-based rapper and former 8th grade teacher, DJ Donwill.
How much: $5-8.

The Fancy Show
When: Tuesday, June 2, 8:30pm
Where: Bar Reis, 375 5th Avenue at 6th Street
What: This weekly stand-up comedy series is “100% free (no drink minimum) and contains 100% good times.” Plus, they even give away some free drinks with those laughs!
How much: Free.

Celebrate Brooklyn
When: Wednesday, June 3, 8-11pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: The summer concert series kicks off tonight with a performance by the “Queen of Funk,” Chaka Khan. So come out to the Bandshell and help Celebrate Brooklyn kick off its 37th season.
How much: Free.

Brooklyn Volunteer Fair
When: Thursday, June 4, 5:30-8pm
Where: Park Slope Armory, 15th Street at 8th Avenue
What: Learn about volunteer opportunities for the entire family at the Brooklyn Volunteer Fair, sponsored by Assemblyman Jim Brennan. Over 70 different organizations with volunteer opportunities in Brooklyn will be represented. Come find out how to get more involved in your community.
