Brooklyn Afternoons: Art and Conversation for Individuals with Memory Loss

What: Individuals with memory loss and their care partners are invited to enjoy art, conversation, and each other’s company during nonpublic hours in our galleries. Light refreshments are provided, and FM assistive listening devices and wheelchairs are available.

Stoop Series: Animation for Adults
When: Tuesday, April 14 from 7-9pm
Where: BRIC House at 647 Fulton Street
What: Co-presented by the Sunday Film Series, this event presents very intimate content in a very intimate setting! Hear from the filmmakers about their choices in drawing adult content (sex, religion, death, mental illness), as well as their drawing and coloring techniques! Learn the history of animation, how it evolved over time, and somewhere along the way got “kidnapped” as a children’s medium. The animators’ will present some of their favorite adult short films! Stick around for an opportunity to ask your burning questions, with an open discussion and Q & A with the animators afterwards. Those who pay extra close attention might even walk away with some amazing party favors!

Nonfiction Book Group: “My Korean Deli”
When: Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30pm
Where: Greene Grape Annex at 753 Fulton Street
What: For April, the group reads Ben Ryder Howe’s memoir My Korean Deli. Howe’s wife, the daughter of Korean immigrants, decides to repay her parents’ self-sacrifice by buying them a store, and Howe, an editor at the Paris Review, agrees to go along. The book follows the store’s tumultuous life span, and along the way paints the portrait of an extremely unlikely partnership between characters with roots across society, from the Brooklyn streets to Seoul to Puritan New England. Owning the deli becomes a transformative experience for everyone involved as they struggle to salvage the original gift–and the family–while sorting out issues of values, work, and identity.

Brooklyn Voices: Peter Singer and Michael Specter
When: Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30pm
Where: St. Joseph’s College’s Hill Center at 212 Vanderbilt Avenue
What: Philosopher, academic and activist Peter Singer’s book, The Most Good You Can Do: How Effective Altruism is Changing Ideas About Living Ethically presents the ideas behind “effective altruism,” a challenging new movement of people who want to live more altruistically, and to make sure that what they do has the greatest possible impact for good. Singer will discuss the ideas in his new book with Michael Specter, who writes about science, technology, and global public health for The New Yorker. A book signing follows.

Multimedia Artist Talk: Kehinde Wiley and DJ Spooky

What: Kehinde Wiley is known throughout the world for his vivid portraits of African American men and women that use the conventions of traditional European portraiture. The portraits raise questions about race, gender, and the politics of representation. Join Wiley in an interactive multimedia talk exploring Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic. A performance by special guest Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky, and a Q&A session follow the talk. Food is available for purchase at The Counter café, and there will be a cash bar.

Brooklyn Poetry Slam

What: For their debut album as Star Rover, guitarist Will Graefe (Landlady, Jesse Harris, Larkin Grimm) and drummer Jeremy Gustin (Delicate Steve, Marc Ribot, Albert Hammond, Jr.) began with the music of John Fahey and ended up in their own corner of a skewed, over-driven, weird America. Join Brooklyn Independent Media for a live in-studio performance and interview with Star Rover.

Book Talk: Jill Alexander Essbaum and Alex Morris

Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Award-winning poet Jill Alexander Essbaum has generated international buzz for her new novel Hausfrau, which updates the tradition of Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary in a novel that is as exciting and suspenseful as it is confident and sophisticated. Essbaum talks about her work with Fort Greene neighbor Alex Morris, a contributing editor at New York Magazine who also writes for Rolling Stone and other publications.

BAM Senior Cinema: “Planet of the Apes”

Where: BAM Harvey Theater at 651 Fulton Street
What: Senior Cinema offers seniors 65 and older free admission to repertory classics, with complimentary popcorn and soda. Reservations are required and can be made up to three weeks in advance. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-seated basis. All cinemas are wheelchair accessible and offer infrared systems for people who are hard of hearing upon requests. Stations of the Cross Exhibit
When: Through Friday, April 16
Where: Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew at 520 Clinton Avenue
What: The 14 stations of the cross are presented by 14 Brooklyn-based artists, each working with only one restriction: uniform size.  This project resurrects a connection between the church as patron of the arts and the artists as instruments of bringing the litany to the lay population. These works are created by artists of broad ethnic and religious backgrounds including Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, and even Agnostics. As “ambassadors,” this diverse collective presents an open dialogue, with respectful interpretations of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.

Mapping Brooklyn
When: Through May 3 from 10am-8pm daily, except Mondays
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.
