AARP Free Tax Help and Preparation
When: Wednesday, February 25 from 1-4pm
Where: Bedford Library at 496 Franklin Avenue
What: For low and middle income taxpayers. First come, first served. To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. For a list of documents you may need to bring, visit the AARP website.

Movie Night: “African American Leaders, Past and Present”
When: Wednesday, February 25 from 3-6pm
Where: Walt Whitman Library at 93 Saint Edwards Street
What: Featuring Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, and Barack Obama. Bring your own candy, popcorn and a drink. Group discussion afterwards.

Mayoral Control Forum

Where: Brooklyn Law School, Moot Court Room at 250 Joralemon Street
What: Hosted by Public Advocate Letitia James. The first in a series of Mayoral Control Forums. These forums will take place in all five boroughs. Speak out “about mayoral control and how modifications to the law can help to improve our education system. This is an opportunity to discuss what real community and parent engagement should look like moving forward.”

Opening Reception: Mapping Brooklyn
When: Wednesday, February 25 from 7-9pm
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.

Book Talk: Mark Doten and Justin Taylor
When: Wednesday, February 25 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: In Mark Doten’s debut novel The Infernal, a severely burned boy appears in the desert in the early years of the Iraq war. Who is he? Where did he come from? And, crucially, what does he know? In pursuit of that information, an interrogator is summoned from his prison cell, and a hideous and forgotten apparatus of torture is retrieved from the vaults.

Book Launch: Reif Larsen

What: I Am Radar is an epic, immersive novel that draws on the furthest reaches of quantum physics, forgotten history, and performance art. Falling in with a secretive group of puppeteers and scientists—who stage experimental art for people suffering under war-time sieges—Radar is forced to confront the true nature of his identity.
