Poetry Society of America Presents: Tracy K. Smith
When: Monday, March 30 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Brooklyn-based poet Tracy K. Smith is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the collection Life On Mars. Her new book Ordinary Lightis a quietly potent memoir that explores coming-of-age and the meaning of home against a complex backdrop of race, faith, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and daughter.

Free Movie: “Moms Mabley”

What: Starring Whoopi Goldberg. Documentary about Jackie “Moms” Mabley, an African-American stand-up comic and show-biz pioneer who emerged from the Chitlin’ Circuit of African-American Vaudeville to become a mainstream star. Once billed as “The Funniest Woman in the World,” Mabley pushed the boundaries of comedy by tackling topics such as gender, sex, and racism and performed up until her death in 1975.

Explore and Create: Bracelets

Stoop Series: Convo with Bernice McFadden and Terry McMillan

What: In collaboration with Akashic Books, an independent publishing company, BRIC is hosting a night with writers Bernice McFadden andTerry McMillan (Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back). These long-time friends will discuss McFadden’s novel Loving Donovanwhich includes a new introduction by McMillan. Tracey Smith of Go on Girl! Book Club will be moderating the conversation between McFadden and McMillan.

An Evening with Counterpoint Press
When: Tuesday, March 31 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Greenlight celebrates the work of venerable independent publisher Counterpoint Press with two authors of novels about the end of an era. Brooklyn author Casey Walker’s debut novel Last Days of Shanghai is simultaneously a murder mystery, a literary thriller and a postmodern bildungsroman about one man’s slow descent into moral compromise and self-loathing. The Last Days of Video is the debut by Jeremy Hawkins, a bookseller turned author based in Chapel Hill, NC; set in a college town in 2007, the novel follows a grumpy indie video store owner who must overcome corporate bicycle gangs, a life-training cult and his own self-destructive tendencies to fight the opening of a Blockbuster in his town.

AARP Free Tax Help and Preparation
When: Wednesday, April 1 from 1-4pm

What: For low and middle income taxpayers. First come, first served. To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. For a list of documents you may need to bring, visit the AARP website.

After-School Homework Help

CB 2 Health and Environment Committee Meeting
When: Wednesday, April 1 at 6pm
Where: Brooklyn Hospital, Dining Room A at 121 DeKalb Avenue (at St. Felix Street)
What: The meeting will begin with two presentations on green infrastructure (GI) and stormwater management, from the city’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Pratt Institute. The DEP team will discuss Green Infrastructure and present the proposed locations of additional bioswales in Community District 2. Pratt’s graduate Sustainable Environmental Systems program will present on Fluid Frontiers. The project is an interdisciplinary research initiative addressing stormwater management within the Red Hook sewer-shed, which spans Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Red Hook, Gowanus and beyond.

WalkNYC: One Map To Move Them All
When: Thursday, April 2 from 7-9pm
Where: BRIC House at 647 Fulton Street
What: NYC DOT worked with an international group of professionals in industrial and graphic design, wayfinding and mapmaking, to create a comprehensive wayfinding system – a first for NYC.  Hear about  how the maps and structures were created and the planning that is driving the installation of signs from  DOT staff and consultants.

The Book Cooks: Max and Eli Sussman
When: Thursday, April 2 at 7:30pm
Where: Berg’n at 899 Bergen Street
What: Each ticketed event includes tasty samples prepared by the chefs as well as a copy of the featured book. Chef brothers Max and Eli Sussman are back with their fourth cookbook, Classic Recipes for Modern People, featuring over 75 recipes that reimagine classic dishes from their childhood and yours, with a little humor baked in along the way.

ONGOING

Stations of the Cross Exhibit
When: Through April 16
Where: Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew at 520 Clinton Avenue
What: The 14 stations of the cross are presented by 14 Brooklyn-based artists, each working with only one restriction: uniform size.  This project resurrects a connection between the church as patron of the arts and the artists as instruments of bringing the litany to the lay population. These works are created by artists of broad ethnic and religious backgrounds including Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, and even Agnostics. As “ambassadors,” this diverse collective presents an open dialogue, with respectful interpretations of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.

Mapping Brooklyn
When: Through May 3 from 10am-8pm daily, except Mondays
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.
