For her new book Just Kids From the Bronx, award-winning photographer and author Arlene Aldainterviewed more than 60 Bronx natives that have gone on to make important contributions in nearly every field of endeavor. Carl Reiner talks about being a Jewish boy during the Great Depression, Neil deGrasse Tyson tells of using his telescope at age twelve on the roof his building, and Grandmaster Melle Mel reminisces on learning to rhyme and entertain, eventually changing the music world forever.

What: The theme for this season is Shortlisted. For March, the group discusses Jeet Thayil’s novel Narcopolis, shortlisted for the 2012 Booker Prize. Written in poetic and affecting prose, Thayil’s luminous debut novel charts the evolution of a great and broken metropolis across three decades.

Author Talk: César Aira and Hari Kunzru

What: Aira has been called “the author who can’t be stopped.” His new book The Musical Brain & Other Stories is the first collection of his stories to appear in English, and comprises 20 tales about oddballs, freaks, and crazies. Aira gives readers imponderables to ponder and bizarre and seemingly out-of-context plot lines to consider, as well as thoughtful and passionate takes on everyday reality. Aira talks about his work with acclaimed novelist and journalist Hari Kunzru, author most recently of Gods Without Men.

Conversations: Replicas of Masterwork Paintings

What: Professor of Fine Arts Frank Lind presents a body of work created over the course of the last 15 years, employing old master techniques in the re-creation, re-imagining, and “updating” of well-known masterwork paintings.

Stations of the Cross Exhibit
When: Through April 16
Where: Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew at 520 Clinton Avenue
What: The 14 stations of the cross are presented by 14 Brooklyn-based artists, each working with only one restriction: uniform size. This project resurrects a connection between the church as patron of the arts and the artists as instruments of bringing the litany to the lay population. These works are created by artists of broad ethnic and religious backgrounds including Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, and even Agnostics. As “ambassadors,” this diverse collective presents an open dialogue, with respectful interpretations of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.

Mapping Brooklyn
When: Through May 3 from 10am-8pm daily, except Mondays
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.
