Atlantic Yards Community Development Corporation meeting

Emergency Medical Transportation: What To Know In Advance
When: Monday, March 23 from 6:30-8:30pm
Where: Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church at 85 South Oxford Street
What: Know in advance your options for care and transportation before a moment of anxiety. In an serious emergency – call 911. However, if you find yourself in a less urgent situation, you might consider other options.  Learn the parameters of 911 and private ambulance services, such as whether you’ll be able to dictate the destination in advance, what services to expect, estimated cost (+ insurance coverage), and accompaniment in-transit.

What: Delicious Foods, the new novel by Fort Greene author James Hannaham (author of God Says No) addresses poverty, racism, addiction, and the dark side of American agricultural labor. Told in three voices – a mother, son, and the drug that unravels their lives – the novel moves back and forth in time, converging on the sinister industrial farm of the title. The book is a Greenlight Bookstore First Editions Club selection.

Young Readers Book Group

What: Led by Greenlight bookseller Grace, this book group is geared toward kids ages 8 to 14, and reads great contemporary and classic chapter books. Parents are welcome (but not required) to attend, and pizza is served. For March, the group discusses Zahrah the Windseeker by Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu.

AARP Free Tax Help and Preparation

What: Fort Greene neighbor Lindsey Palmer (author of Pretty In Ink) returns to Greenlight for the launch of her second novel If We Lived Here! An exploration of love, friendship, and the particular horrors of a NYC apartment hunt, the novel follows 30-something couple Emma and Nick as they take the plunge into cohabitation, slowly stumbling towards what it means to grow up, build a life together, and create a home that’s just right for them. Palmer talks about her book and her work with Liz Egan, Books Editor at Glamour Magazine and author of the forthcoming novel A Window Opens.

Movement Class for Older Adults

What: Free community forum on tenants’ rights, scams, identity theft, nutrition and heart health, and the Vulcan Society of Black Firefighters. Speakers include: Regina Wilson, president of the Vulcan Society, Jonathan Gross of Brooklyn Housing and Family Services, NYS Assistant Attorney General Matthew Eubank, and registered dietician Theresa Brereton.

Book Talk: Chris Parry and Pamela Erens
When: Thursday, March 26 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: In his short story collection How To Carry Bigfoot Home, Chris Tarry – one of New York’s most sought-after jazz musicians – examines the frailty of the human experience, and the common struggles that affect us all. From an out-of-work dragon-slaying father in “Here Be Dragons” to a family arguing aboard a rocket ship in “Topics in Advanced Rocketry,” the stories use fantastic settings, blazing wit, and imaginative circumstances to explore very human truths. The stories work to reconcile the public self with the private heart—to contemplate the monsters we carry home and lay bare for the ones we love the most. Tarry talks about his work with fellow author Pamela Erens, author of The Virgins and The Understory.

Conversations: Replicas of Masterwork Paintings
When: Through Friday, March 27
Where: Pratt Institute, President’s Office Gallery, Main Building via Willoughby Avenue
What: Professor of Fine Arts Frank Lind presents a body of work created over the course of the last 15 years, employing old master techniques in the re-creation, re-imagining, and “updating” of well-known masterwork paintings.
How much: Free

Stations of the Cross Exhibit
When: Through April 16
Where: Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew at 520 Clinton Avenue
What: The 14 stations of the cross are presented by 14 Brooklyn-based artists, each working with only one restriction: uniform size.  This project resurrects a connection between the church as patron of the arts and the artists as instruments of bringing the litany to the lay population. These works are created by artists of broad ethnic and religious backgrounds including Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, and even Agnostics. As “ambassadors,” this diverse collective presents an open dialogue, with respectful interpretations of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.

Mapping Brooklyn
When: Through May 3 from 10am-8pm daily, except Mondays
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.
