We Haven’t Forgotten About You, Anthony Weiner

The final post, dated May 30, on Anthony Weiner's Facebook page.

While Anthony Weiner’s political career is on hold, and candidates wait to fill his shoes, the never-ending stream of comments on the former congressman for the 9th Congressional District’s Facebook page live on… nearly three months since the hapless pol announced his resignation, June 16, after he mis-tweeted an image of his boxer-clad bulge.

The last post on the normally social media-friendly Weiner’s Facebook page — dating back to May 30, three days before he ignited the steamy scandal — features a link to a New Yorker story entitled “Romney’s Dilemma,” with Weiner commenting that Romney is “[d]efinitely the best GOP candidate. Gonna love the Mitt vs. Mitt debates in Iowa,” an anti-climactic Facebook swan song, considering the magnitude of the uproar he created.

After the media’s relentless scrutiny over NC-17-rated tweets became more intense, and colleagues in his own party began pressuring him to step down, the beleaguered congressman ceased updating his Facebook and Twitter accounts, and ultimately announced his resignation at the Council Center For Senior Citizens, 1001 Quentin Road.

With voters heading to the polls today for the special election to decide the new representative for the 9th Congressional District, Facebookers continue to leave comments on the Mitt Romney post, both in support of and against Weiner. As of today, there are more than 35,020 comments, and the number keeps rising.

With comments representing practically every opinion in the vast and murky political spectrum, ranging from taunting and cruel, to erudite, respectful, and witty, one thing is clear about Anthony Weiner’s active Facebook page — it is no holds barred.

Here is a sampling of some gems from recent days:

  • “Anyone else think its [sic] funny that a Republican is leading in the polls to replace to Weiner?” – Facebook user “George Ford (Papa Georgio)”
  • “You TeaTard TROLL fools are STILL pretending POUT-RAGE over Anthony Weiner (consenting texts btwn adults isn’t a crime!) Yet you keep turning a blind eye to your own corrupt GOP – Look at the FLAMING EMBARRASSMENT in your ranks!” – Facebook user “Elisa Vote Dem Velez”
  • “I can’t begin to tell you how much I miss you Anthony. PLEASE – get back in the game. We’ve never needed you more!” – Facebook user “Anne Johnson Mahon”
  • “Expect Jewish Riots in the 9th Congressional District of New York”– Facebook user “Nick Contompasis,” linking to his blog.

But, with all the sparring in the impromptu forum, with verbal sucker-punching that makes Rachel Maddow sound like Holly Hobby, perhaps the most understated clarity came from commenter Gloria Banta, who argued that Weiner “…was very effective at representing his people, and that’s what they are elected for. I would not argue any less for a Pub in the same situation. Some things are nobody’s business!”

Regardless, we have to wonder how Weiner would’ve fared in this election. Love ‘im or hate ‘im, his popularity — as illustrated by how incomparably engaged constituents are with his “brand,” if you will — clearly surpasses any of the alternatives. What do you think?

Comment policy

  1. If he ran in my district, I’d vote for him.  He’s a politician who actually cares about his constituents, a rare thing.  What he does with his dick isn’t my concern.

  2. I just found out – Bob Turner (the GOP contender) is the creator of the Jerry Springer show and The Rush Limbaugh show. Anyone who votes for him needs to be committed. David Weprin FTW!

  3. One of the reasons I am not voting today is that I think Weiner should still be in Congress.

Another reason is the robo calling and the flyers sent to my house and one of the commercials I’ve seen (the one paid for by “the Emergency Committee for Israel who should go get bent). If those aren’t examples of TOO MUCH democracy, I don’t know what else could be.

So I hope everyone who “took part in democracy” today had fun choosing between the hand-it-down-to-me Big Machine Pol and the What-Does-a-Congressman-Even-Do guy faking being a regular person. This whole system is a sham and a farce. The sooner a military dictator is in charge, the better.

  4. Always liked him. Didn’t ever care about the over-blown scandal. Am still pissed at Pelosi etc for not standing up for him. Am still disgusted by just about every news medium that led with the story & made it impossible to die out. Still hoping one day he’ll get back into the game.

  5. Rather than vote for Turner or Weprin, being discontent with the way, why, and how they were selected, I wrote-in myself.  On second thought, seeing these pro-Weiner comments, I will not be surprised if  many wrote him in.  Hope the final results contain the larger number of write-ins.   Now back to drafting my acceptance or concessionl speech as the case may be.

  7. I cannot believe I’m saying this………  After years of him pissing me off and sometimes writing in my own name against him, I actually went to the polls today and wrote in Anthony Weiner’s name.  For all his faults, because he was an arrogant, pompous, ass, he did good for Sheepshead Bay.  I’m pissed at him again for screwing my neighborhood out of a good representative, but I voted for him today and, if he makes a comeback in my district, I’ll vote for him again.  Unbelievable!

  8. This is an example of the open-mindedness that the internet has undoubtedly spawned…. “if you vote for Turner, you should be committed”….  Why don’t you just say “if you don’t think like me, you’re a moron”.

  9. As much as I despised Anthony Weiner and his obnoxious way about him, and his political thinking, I actually agree with the crowd. I’m not in favor of politicians being disqualifed on  “I gotcha”  methodology.. We’re disqualifying too many people on criteria not relevant to government.  Then again, if he were Republican, the crowd here would be yelling “off with his head”…

I just finished a book on the impeachment and trial of Andrew Johnson. You should see what our government was in THOSE days. Votes were being bought and sold, pretty openly! Bribery and corruption galore!

  10. WOW!  You’re disconnected from reality.

How you can sit there & try to JUSTIFY your not voting while simultaneously wah-wah-whining about the system is back-asswards self-defeating & hypocritical.

Ending your nonsensical rationalizations with “The sooner a military dictator is in charge, the better” only underscores your irrational, convoluted pov(s).

  11. Hi hater!  *waves*

He kicked your cry-whining GOP butt good, huh? 🙂

    Congressman Anthony
    Weiner (D-NY) schools the GOP

^ GOP RepubliCAN’T Baggers are a laughable JOKE who
regularly show contempt for the constitution they PRETEND to revere.

Weiner Mocks House GOP Oath Blunder: ‘The GOP
Violates The Constitution On Their Very First Day’

^ It cost us taxpayers $1.1 million dollars!

They couldn’t even stomach reading the whole
thing… they missed 4 parts and had to go back and read two of them into the
record… they still ignored 2 parts of the constitution in the end… which is
a pretty good record for a Republican… HAHA!

GOP Republican Baggers FEARED Anthony Weiner!

  12. Bruce B you don’t understand the differences btwn Dems & Republicans…

TeaBagger pseudo-christian sensibilities got all FUH-KLEMPT because of a no-sex sex scandal of tweets btwn consenting adults –

But where was their POUTRAGE when Married Ensign (R) had an affair with his staffers wife & then had his parrents PAY THEM to cover it up?

Or when David Vitter (R) who
is STILL serving in congress, was busted frequenting a prostitute??

Yet TeaBagger cry-whiners weren’t feigning POUTRAGE over on Vitter’s page!

    Then there’s my personal
favorite – When the Head of the GOP, WEEPER OF THE HOUSE
JOHN BOEHNER (R) was found to be LITERALLY – not just figuratively this
time – SLEEPING WITH LOBBYISTS?! <– oh the humanity!

    Nary a
frickin *PEEP* from the pseudo-Christian, pseudo-intellectual,
pseudo-patriotic GOP Baggers for them. In keeping with their
modus operandi of “SILENCE” they should have minded their own business when it came to OUR Reps – who don’t, A – run on
fallacious platforms of “Christian Family Values” like their immoral GOP representatives do and B – nor do they impose their religious beliefs
    & values upon anyone else!

The GOP has their own CRAPPY REPS & PARTY to worry about, the hypocrites:

8 of Top 10 Porn-Consuming States Voted Republican in 2008 Presidential Election

  13. The Clinton CurseMark Sanford joins other victims of the Clinton curse like Bob Livingston, Larry Craig and Newt Gingrich. (02:03) @ the GOP pointing fingers at Clinton for his “affair” when they’re ALL GUILTY of the same – AND WORSE!!

  14. Debunking the myth that Republicans have the moral high ground:

Republicans More Likely to be Caught in Sex Scandals
(And Their Scandals Are More Likely to be Gay)

Republican Sex Scandals DWARF those of DemocratsRepublican Sex Scandals Dwarf Those of Democrats.

Republican sex scandals outnumber Dems two to one.

  15. FACTS:

Republicans were involved in 61% of sex scandals in the past 10 years, whereas Democrats were involved in just 39%.

Moreover, 34% of the total number of scandals were gay scandals (i.e,
involving an ostensibly straight politician and a same-sex partner),
with Republicans accounting for 78.5% of all gay scandals. Republicans
were also involved in 66% of the underage scandals.

    If a sex
scandal is going on in Washington, there is a 2 in 3 chance it will
involve a Republican. And If it’s a gay scandal, it’s almost a sure bet
that it involves a Republican. Good Family Values Party!
