It’s National Watermelon Day!

Our friends at Brokelyn alerted us to the fact that today is National Watermelon Day, and for as hot as it is, we are absolutely ready to celebrate this “holiday.” Here are a few easy ways to enjoy it in the neighborhood:

$1.50 gets you a watermelon paleta at the Mexican grocery on the corner of Foster and Argyle, which is one of the 10 places that get them in bulk from the awesome Sley Deli. It’s so clearly made of watermelon that you’re likely to find an occasional small seed in one.

Anyone know where else in the neighborhood they might have the Sley paletas? I thought I saw them someplace on Church a while ago (possibly El Acuario), and I’m not certain the ones they have at La Nueva Union on Cortelyou are from there.

You can get cut watermelon at so many places–including, strangely enough, at New Hong Kong House on Cortelyou between Westminster and Argyle, where they have this sign up in the window.

Of course, you can always buy a whole one (49 cents per pound at the Met on Cortelyou) and try out a recipe if you feel like going beyond the traditional wedge.
