Use The NYPD’s Compstat 2.0 System To Understand Crime In Our Neighborhood
BY SARAH CREAN AND HEATHER CHIN
Residents have a new tool to understand crime patterns in our area.
Last week, the NYPD unveiled Compstat 2.0, a website which allows users to examine crime statistics up to the most recent week, identify crime locations by street intersection, and get other details about a crime.
In announcing the release of Compstat 2.0, the NYPD noted that crime data reporting has been largely limited to the seven major crime categories — murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and auto-related grand larceny — with few exceptions.
“There was no additional context provided such as date, time, or the specific type of crime within the broader category.” the NYPD said. “CompStat 2.0 addresses these issues. Now any member of the public can visit https://compstat.nypdonline.org and conduct a crime data analysis that will provide all of these parameters.”
We will be exploring Compstat 2.0 in the next several weeks but we took an initial look at statistics for burglaries in the 88th Precinct, which extends south from Flushing down to Atlantic Avenue, and east from Flatbush Avenue to Classon Avenue.
As you can see in the table below, Compstat 2.0 reports that there have been 15 robberies in the 88th Precinct in the last 28 days.
On the Compstat screen, you will also see a map showing showing the locations — actually the closest intersection — for each of the crimes in the category you have selected.
To take a closer look, you can blow up the map by clicking on the white icon above it. See our red arrow below.
And when you blow up the map, you can zero in on a particular location. Each blue dot is an individual burglary report for a specific location; one location has two reports because it was targeted twice.
When you click on these dots, you get some details about the crime. In this case, a business at DeKalb and Clermont Avenues was hit on both February 17 and February 25 in the early morning hours (the NYPD categorizes those as night burglaries because the incidents occurred overnight).
We hope you will start exploring these statistics and let us know what you find!
