A four-year-old boy was taken to Methodist Hospital after plunging almost 50 feet down an elevator shaft at a Union Street garage last night. According to police, the boy succumbed to his injuries this morning.

According to the FDNY, the incident took place on Wednesday, May 25 at the Park Slope Garage at 841 Union Street (across from the Park Slope Food Coop). The FDNY responded to the call at approximately 8:06pm.

The boy was located on the third floor of the garage along with his parents and a parking attendant before the fall took place, according to a spokesperson for the police.

NBC News reported that the child’s parents lost sight of the boy for a brief period of time, when he fell through a 10-inch gap between the elevator and the third floor of the garage.

The parking garage is primarily used for condo residents in the area who own individual spots. NBC News reports that it is unusual for car owners to go up to their cars at this garage. In this case, the parking attendant made an exception for the parents who wanted to get something from their car.

The Department of Buildings was investigating the incident last night, however they could not be reached for comment this morning.
