A car accident on Atlantic Avenue just a few blocks from Barclays Center led to a mallet-wielding man’s attack on a FreshDirect worker in broad daylight on Atlantic Avenue.

According to the New York Post, the worker’s vehicle and a van collided on Sunday, March 20 at approximately 12pm on Atlantic Avenue in the vicinity of Barclays Center.

The driver of the black van — identified as Damian Bailey — began to flee the scene when the 23-year-old FreshDirect worker leapt onto the vehicle.

A witness to the incident reported 34-year-old Bailey began to drive off with the 23-year-old victim on the van’s hood.

The suspect stopped the van after approximately three blocks, jumped out of the car, and began assaulting the victim with a mallet.

The attack was caught on tape by a witness who was traveling to the Barclays Center in an Uber vehicle. He filmed the incident with his mobile phone, subsequently posting it on YouTube. The film is posted above.

“I had no idea that there was going to be a hammer attack as the car rolled up, and I stumble with the camera because I wasn’t sure if I should keep recording or to try and help,” the witness in the Uber wrote online. “I realized that there is nothing I could do in those few seconds to a guy like that, in that state, with a hammer, and that it would be best to film the crime for the victim and his family.”

The Post reports the police arrived after the suspect thrashed the victim for a final time. According to cops, the victim was struck a total of five times.

Cops charged the suspect with menacing, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.

The FreshDirect employee, who has been identified only as Kevin, was taken to the hospital. His status has not yet been released.

Company representatives of FreshDirect said, “Our hearts go out to Kevin and his loved ones. We have visited him, are in close contact with his family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”
