Two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after a molotov cocktail exploded in a small apartment building on 83rd Street near Bay Parkway early Thursday, May 28.

DNAinfo reports:

The explosive caused a fire inside the entryway at the 83rd Street red brick, three-story home at about 3:01 a.m., according to the FDNY and a first-floor tenant.
The tenant, who just gave her first name, Angie, said she heard a “big bang” and then went outside to see what happened with one of her four teenage children.
They saw a burning Bacardi bottle stuffed with newspaper and cardboard on the front porch.

When the mother and daughter couldn’t douse the flames, they called the police.

A second floor tenant, Dena Brus, said she heard a commotion downstairs, but wasn’t worried until a police officer banged on her door and she saw that he was gasping for air. Brus woke her six children, ages 7 to 13, and firefighters helped her bring them to safety.

Faith Leahy, who lives in a first floor apartment, told CBS New York that she and her family are worried about their safety after the incident and are considering installing a security camera.

“I think it’s absurd you’re willing to go to this extent,” Leahy told the outlet. “I don’t know if this was directed towards me or just someone being foolish or it’s just ridiculous and no idea who might have been behind it. No idea.”

Two officers were taken to Lutheran Hospital where they were treated for minor smoke inhalation, according to the NYPD. There were no other injuries.

There have been no arrests and an investigation is ongoing, cops said.
