Two Critically Injured In Marine Park Gas Explosion

Scene of the explosion

Two people were critically injured after a propane tank blew up in Marine Park early this morning.

First responders arrived at the scene, a residential home at Marine Parkway and Quentin Road, at 2:29 a.m. today and doused the flames. The two critically injured people were transported to Staten Island University Hospital, a leading facility for treating burn victims.

As of this 9:00 a.m., the home remain cordoned off and a heavy police presence was on scene.

The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time. Sheepshead Bites has reached out to authorities for an update.

UPDATE (12:38 p.m.): First of all, my thanks to both the NYPD and FDNY, who responded to my request in record time. Both agencies are still investigating the incident, but the NYPD informed Sheepshead Bites that officers at the scene observed a garage in the rear of the home that had been converted into an apartment unit. That is where the explosion occurred. The two victims, and male and female, are both now in stable condition. The NYPD could not say whether the victims lived in the apartment, as their identification suggested they resided elsewhere.
