Tuesday Morning Snow Headed Our Way

Think we got off easy after Sunday’s light dusting of snow? Think again. A winter weather advisory, in effect from 6am to 6pm on Tuesday, is calling for 2 to 4 inches of snow that should kick off just as everyone is headed to work and school. The city has issued a snow alert, and is getting the plows and salt trucks ready to tackle area roads. As of Monday evening, Tuesday trash and recycling collections are still scheduled to occur, but DSNY says to expect delays.

Update 9am, December 10: Alternate side parking has been suspended. Meters are still in effect.

In the event that we do see some accumulation, keep these rules regarding snow and ice removal in mind:

Every owner, lessee, tenant, occupant, or other person having charge of any lot or building must clean snow and/or ice from the sidewalk within 4 hours after the snow has stopped falling, or by 11am if the snow has stopped falling after 9pm the previous evening.

Snow may not be thrown into the street.

If the snow or ice becomes frozen so hard that it cannot be removed, the sidewalk may be strewn with ashes, sand, sawdust, or similar suitable material within the same time limits.

The sidewalk must be thoroughly cleaned as soon as the weather permits.

Want some bonus points with Santa? Check in on any neighbors or family members who aren’t healthy enough to shovel their own property, and offer to help. Fines range from $100 to $350 for not shoveling, and nobody wants to be saddled with that during the holidays, so get those walkways cleared, South Slope.
