Local artist Ketta Ioannidou will have a series of eight oil pantings on canvas on display at South Oxford Space (138 South Oxford Street) beginning today. Entitled “Black Hole Sun,” the series explores the “dreamlike state between two worlds” and two times, past and present, imagination and distant memories.

“I hope that people can see their own imaginary place where an alternate order can be realized,” said Ioannidou of the impact that she hopes her work has on viewers.

As the exhibit description goes on to elaborate:

Built upon memories of growing up in Cyprus, like the way the sky peaked through the grapevines along the veranda of her late grandmother’s house or how the horizon dividing water and land dissipated at certain moments of the day, an imaginary timeless place is formed where new histories can be realized. Blurring the lines between image and object, the work alludes to landscape’s role of reinventing our own myths, while becoming viable metaphors for what’s real and what’s imagined.  In a pursuit to investigate personal relationships to cultural dislocation and memory, nature, and site, it becomes a continuous attempt to build bridges between different worlds and realities.

The opening reception is tonight from 6-8pm and the exhibit — presented through the Alliance of Resident Theatres (A.R.T./New York) — runs through Sunday, April 26.

Regular exhibit hours are Monday through Friday from 10am to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.  Additional viewing hours are easily arranged by calling 718-398-3078,
