Tonight: Greenfield, Treyger And FDNY Sponsor Fire Safety Seminar
In the wake of the tragic Midwood fire that killed seven siblings more than a week ago, City Councilmen David Greenfield and Mark Treyger are joining forces with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) for a fire safety, prevention and education seminar, tonight at 7:30pm at Congregation Shaare Zion, 2030 Ocean Parkway between Foster Avenue and Parkville Avenue.
Residents will be able to hear tips and practical advice as to what to do when a dangerous situation erupts. The first 250 attendees to arrive at the event, coordinated by the Morris I. Franco Cancer Center, will also receive a free smoke detector sponsored by Renewal.
According to a press release, while hot-plate fires comprise only approximately one tenth of one percent of all fires, cooking-related fires are actually the leading cause of home fires. A number of Jewish residents of the area are Sabbath-observant and rely upon the use of a hot plate during the Sabbath due to the restriction against turning electrical devices on and off. To that end, Greenfield has compiled a list of fire safety tips from the FDNY, which he will also distribute at the seminar.
