After numerous accidents at Ocean and Parkside Avenues, the city Department of Transportation is planning on making a number of changes to the intersection to make it safer — and officials want to hear your input on their proposal at a town hall tomorrow, Wednesday, July 15.

The DOT and Councilman Mathieu Eugene will hold the meeting about the planned changes at the John Hus Moravian Church (153 Ocean Avenue, by Lincoln Road) at 6:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

The DOT first presented their proposal for the intersection during a Community Board 9 meeting in June. The plan aims to address the numerous accidents and injuries that have occurred at that intersection in recent years. Between 2009 and 2013 (the most recent data provided by the city), there were 102 injuries at Ocean and Parkside Avenues, including 22 pedestrians and 74 people in motor vehicles, according to the DOT. Of the total pedestrian crashes from 2009 to 2013, 68.8 percent of the individuals were crossing with the signal.

The DOT’s plan includes:

  • Installing a pedestrian island in the north crosswalk.
  • Banning the southbound and westbound left turns at the intersection.

For more information about the proposal, you can visit the DOT’s website and see the agency’s presentation to CB 9 here. You may also call the DOT Brooklyn Borough Commissioner’s Office at 646-892-1350.
