Tofu On 7th To Move & Become Tofu On 5th

A Chinese take-out joint is moving down to 5th Avenue from 7th because of that often-heard story: rising rents.

Tofu on 7th, a solid choice for take-out and delivery, will be moving from its space at 226 7th Avenue, between 3rd and 4th Streets, to 384 5th Avenue, on the corner of 6th Street. An employee tells us it’s because of rising rents in the 7th Avenue space.

They’ll be setting up shop in a space that has, since the fall of 2013, been home to Shamisen, a Japanese restaurant that never quite seemed to gain much of a following — which could be due to competition from other sushi spots nearby, including Mura just across the street.

But it looks like Shamisen won’t be completely gone — the new space will still be serving sushi, according to the new awning and to a copy of the new menu, which has a “Shamisen Special Rolls” sections alongside a number of other Japanese options.

Look out for the new Tofu on 5th to open in May.
