Third Avenue Pedestrian Mall Shot Down
Community Board 10 voted against closing Third Avenue in Bay Ridge to traffic for 6 nights during the final weeks of summer. At least until the plan’s sponsors can address traffic and parking concerns.
According to YourNabe.com, around 200 people showed up at the meeting, held on June 8, that usually only draws a handful.
The plan, which has the backing of Senator Marty Golden and Councilman Vincent Gentile, would turn Third Avenue into a pedestrian mall between 82nd and 92nd Street.
Supporters of the proposal passionately addressed the crowd gathered at the hearing, at least half of whom opposed closing Third Avenue.
“People are afraid of change. Move forward. Keep your cars at home,” yelled Susan Michalski at the plans detractors, according to YourNabe.com. “Shame on you people!”
