In Daniel Torday’s novel The Last Flight of Poxl West, a teenager’s romantic vision of his uncle, the WWII fighter pilot of the title, is tested when he learns the darker truths of his wartime experiences. Laura van den Berg’s Find Me, her followup to two acclaimed story collections, centers on Joy, who spends her days working the graveyard shift at a grocery store outside Boston — until a sickness that begins with memory loss and ends with death sweeps the country, and Joy’s immunity to the disease offers her a chance of escape.
