SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24
When: Saturday, October 24 at 11am
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most famous themes in classical music and the perfect way to introduce a young child to the world of classical music, with Carolyn Sloan’s charming and interactive picture book Welcome to the Symphony! Narrated by three mice, the book takes readers on a journey that begins with the musicians tuning up, and introduces the basics of the orchestra, the elements of music, and the families of instruments. But the best part is that every idea is illustrated in sound, with buttons that allow readers to actually hear the different parts and voices of the music. Carolyn Sloan – a songwriter, musician, and music educator at the Berkeley Carroll School here in Brooklyn – presents her book with an interactive musical reading at story time, accompanied by some real, live orchestra musicians – kids can meet the members of the orchestra and even touch the instruments! For October, the group discusses Kate DiCamillo’s Newbery Medal-winning novel Flora and Ulysses. It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book “Terrible Things Can Happen to You,” is just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry and that Flora will be changed too, as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart.
