Wallabout Historic Walking Tour
When: Saturday, September 26 from 11am-1pm
Where: Meet at Fort Greene Park Visitor’s Center
What: FREE guided walking tour through Fort Greene Park and the historic Wallabout neighborhood north of Myrtle Avenue. The neighborhood, most of which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, has a beautiful mix of pre-Civil War homes and late 19th century industrial buildings. The walk will discuss how the neighborhood has developed since the Dutch first arrived in the early 1600’s and highlight notable residents, such as Walt Whitman (visit The Walt Whitman Project for more information). The 2 hour guided tour begins in Fort Greene Park, includes a 1.5 mile walk, and concludes at 99 Ryerson Street.
How much: The event is FREE, but space is limited and registration is required.

Author Talk: Jonathan Franzen

What: Jonathan Franzen’s new novel Purity is a grand story of youthful idealism, extreme fidelity, and murder. The National Book Award-winning author of The Corrections and Freedom has imagined a world of vividly original characters — Californians and East Germans, good parents and bad parents, journalists and leakers — and he follows their intertwining paths through landscapes as contemporary as the omnipresent Internet and as ancient as the war between the sexes. Franzen discusses his work with Wyatt Mason, a Contributing Writer for the New York Times Magazine and a Writer in Residence at Bard College. Book signing to follow.

BAMCafe Live: Eco-Music Big Band: Sun Ra Opera and Celebration

What: The dynamic jazz ensemble Eco-Music Big Band presents the world premiere of scenes fromMr. Mystery: The Return of Sun Ra to Save Planet Earth!, a free-jazz opera by the late activist composer (and Eco-Music Big Band founder) Fred Ho. In this freewheeling odyssey, visionary jazz musician Sun Ra is summoned back to life to save the world from impending destruction brought on by war, global warming, and economic decline.

Literary Conversation with Wendell Pierce
When: Sunday, September 27 at 12pm
Where: Bed-Stuy Restoration, Skylight Gallery at 1368 Fulton Street
What: Actor and Tony Award-winning producer Wendell Pierce, who starred in the HBO series The Wire and Treme and feature films including Selma, Ray, and Waiting to Exhale, was born in New Orleans, where his family still lives. When Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005, Pierce and his family found their home in tatters and their neighborhood of Pontchartrain Park decimated. Heartbroken but resilient, Pierce found a way to reignite his community’s hope and faith in their city through art, with a now-legendary production of Waiting for Godot staged in two of the city’s hardest-hit neighborhoods. Pierce’s new book The Wind in the Reeds unifies his family history with his lifelong passion for theater and music, showing the critical importance art plays in the lifeblood of New Orleans, and the collaborative potential art has to help heal ourselves, our families, and our communities.

Unbound At BAM: Talk with Bryan Doerries

What: Celebrating the launch of The Theater of War, by theater director and translator Bryan Doerries, actors Adam Driver, Paul Giamatti, David Strathairn, and others read portions of Doerries’ book. Doerries then leads an audience discussion exploring how ancient tragedies can help communities that have been visited by trauma begin to heal.

“When We Were Soldiers… once and young (WWWS) / The Heart of Darkness”
When: September 19 through October 24
Where: Brooklyn Navy Yard Hospital
What: Photographic installation by German artist and social activist Bettina WitteVeen. Presented as a visual poem, WWWS will weave together over 100 black and white and color analog photographs culled from historic archives, sculptures in the form of large crosses and a walk-in altar with a sound installation. The installation, including WitteVeen’s wide-ranging and visually rich photographs, will philosophically and artistically explore the depth of humanity’s collective shadow as it finds its ultimate expression in war and genocide.

What: Bring a picture and your written short caption/short story that tells the story of your Clinton Hill neighborhood. It can be a picture of a person or persons, a place, a thing, a picturesque memory. All photographic short stories/captions & pictures will be displayed in the Clinton Hill Library for you and your neighbors to see for the month of September 2015.
