What: The NYC Parks Department “Shape Up! program returns with a new local volunteer instructor and an emphasis on stretching (Essentrics). No registration is needed.

Greene Hill Food Co-op Open House
When: Saturday, October 24 from 10am-6pm
Where: Greene Hill Food Co-op at 18 Putnam Avenue
What: The Greene Hill Food Co-op is hosting a fall Open House to ring in the 2015 harvest season and celebrate Food Day. Neighbors and trial members are welcome to visit the store and learn more about Greene Hill’s fresh, local, seasonal produce and groceries, sold at lower prices. Along with music and costumes, the fall Open House will share food samples, healthy recipes and cooking demonstrations, including an autumnal pumpkin-and-root-vegetable curry. More Co-op Open Houses are planned for two upcoming Saturdays, November 21 and December 12.

Panel Discussion: “Rethinking Gender and Revealing New Paths”

What: Using the exhibition Zanele Muholi: Isibonelo/Evidence, panelists explore gender as an ever-evolving concept and discuss the importance of providing positive models for multiple gender expressions. This intergenerational conversation considers gender within the context of multiple identities, including race, religion, and family.

Armchair/Shotgun Issue 6 Launch Party
When: Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Armchair/Shotgun was founded by writers in January 2009, in the midst of one of the largest unemployment crises in American history since the 1930s. Since then, the press has been named one of the top 10 “Literary Heirs” by the New York Times and consistently publishes exciting new work in its annual journal. Issue 6 features an interview with award-winning poet Jason Koo and the art work of Liz Brizzi and Daniele Genadry, as well as short fiction from Jaclyn Adomeit, Emily Brisse, Allegra Frazier, Fraylie Nord, Andrew Scheinman, and Chris Werkman and poetry from Wendy Merrick Burbank, Hannah Dow, Carrie Hohmann, and William James.

What: A community memorial to beloved soccer coach Magnus Mukoro at the field where Young Rock Soccer Academy students practiced.

88th Precinct Walk For A Cure
When: Sunday, October 25 from 11:30am-2:30pm
Where: Meet at 298 Classon Avenue, walk across Dekalb Avenue to Fort Greene Park
What: The local precinct’s inaugural walk in support of breast cancer awareness. The group departs from the precinct station house at 12 noon and will be capped with a community BBQ and celebration in Fort Greene Park.

Arty Facts: Chic Technique

Workshop: Gender Development in Young Children

“When We Were Soldiers… once and young (WWWS) / The Heart of Darkness”
When: September 19 through October 24
Where: Brooklyn Navy Yard Hospital
What: Photographic installation by German artist and social activist Bettina WitteVeen. Presented as a visual poem, WWWS will weave together over 100 black and white and color analog photographs culled from historic archives, sculptures in the form of large crosses and a walk-in altar with a sound installation. The installation, including WitteVeen’s wide-ranging and visually rich photographs, will philosophically and artistically explore the depth of humanity’s collective shadow as it finds its ultimate expression in war and genocide.

Show and Tell Photos Of Your Clinton Hill Neighborhood

What: Bring a picture and your written short caption/short story that tells the story of your Clinton Hill neighborhood. It can be a picture of a person or persons, a place, a thing, a picturesque memory. All photographic short stories/captions & pictures will be displayed in the Clinton Hill Library for you and your neighbors to see for the month of September 2015.
