Yoga for Adults

Author Talk: Adam Johnson and Jennifer Egan

What: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his bestselling novel The Orphan Master’s Son, Adam Johnson is one of America’s most creative and powerful authors; critics have compared him to Kurt Vonnegut, David Mitchell, and George Saunders. Johnson’s new book, Fortune Smiles, is a major collection of stories that delve deep into love and loss, natural disasters, the influence of technology, and how the political shapes the personal. Ranging from North and South Korea to Stasi East Germany to hurricane-devastated Louisiana, these stories have already won awards for their ability to amplify voices that cannot be heard and in the process teach us about the human heart. Johnson discusses his work with fellow Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist (and Fort Greene neighbor) Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad.

What: Come check out the world’s largest rooftop farm in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard! We’ll tell you about our daily operations and farming methods, the basics of our business model, and the environmental benefits of urban ag and rooftop farming, then give you some time to explore.

Beeswax Lip Balm Workshop

What: dBrooklyn Grange’s honey is well known and loved, but what else comes out of those hives? Beeswax! That honeycomb is the perfect base for an all natural lip balm. In this class, Brooklyn Grange Co-Founder Gwen Schantz will take you through the process of making her favorite NYC harvested beeswax lip balm, scented with natural oils and botanicals. You’ll take home two uniquely flavored balms to keep those kissers soft as can be! You can also bring home a bouquet of farm fresh flowers for a small additional fee.

Opening Reception: “Handmade Abstract”
When: Wednesday, September 9 from 7-9pm
Where: BRIC House at 647 Fulton Street
What: Handmade Abstract will bring together 13 emerging and mid-career artists who are dedicated to the visual language of abstraction and whose work emphasizes the handcrafted nature of the art and processes of fabrication. The exhibition will focus on work that is inspired by the quality and physical nature of its materials and at times, shows the influence of crafting techniques; merging the abstract form with a sense of the handmade, tactile, quirky, and personal. The exhibition will also include a number of younger artists who bring new meaning and relevance to abstraction through their work.

Book Launch: Colin Channer presents “Providential”

What: Hailed by Junot Diaz as “one of the Caribbean Diaspora’s finest writers,” Colin Channer is one of the most compelling voices of our time: a bestselling novelist, co-founder of the Calabash Literary Festival in Jamaica, and a widely published poet. Channer’s debut poetry collection, Providential, is an intimate, moving portrait of violence, family, love, and loss, and a meditation on the figure of the Jamaican policeman. Channer reads from his book and talks with Paul Holdengraber, host ofLIVE From the NYPL. The conversation will be followed by a book signing and reception courtesy of Brooklyn’s own Akashic Books.
