Book Sale Donation Collection
When: Through Friday, April 8
Where: Clinton Hill Library at 380 Washington Avenue
What: The Friends of Clinton Hill will be holding their next Book Sale on Saturday, April 16th in conjunction with the ASPCA Adoption Van. Donations of books and CD’s in good condition will be accepted during library hours ONLY from Tuesday, January 12th through Friday, April 8th.

Toddler Time with RIF

What: The more you read, sing and talk with toddlers, the more they learn! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program dedicated to active toddlers. (18 – 36 months)

Young Readers Book Group

Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: (Please note: this book group is being held one week earlier than usual.) Led by Greenlight bookseller Grace, this book group is geared toward kids ages 9 to 12, and reads great contemporary and classic chapter books. Parents are welcome (but not required) to attend, and pizza is served. For January, the group discussesOranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird. Ayesha lives in a battle-scarred building with her grandmother. Outside, a war is ripping the city apart—but Ayesha doesn’t even know why the two sides are fighting. Life gets scarier when her grandmother’s medicine runs out. So Ayesha takes matters into her own hands. In her search for a doctor she makes a forbidden journey across no man’s land. Set in Lebanon during the civil war, Oranges in No Man’s Land is the richly moving result of Laird’s own experiences in war torn Beirut.

Free Screening: “Radio Unnameable”
When: Tuesday, January 19 at 7pm
Where: BRIC Stoop at 647 Fulton Street
What: A film by Paul Lovelace & Jessica Wolfson. Influential radio personality Bob Fass revolutionized the airwaves by developing a patchwork of music, politics, comedy and reports from the street, effectively creating free-form radio. For nearly 50 years, Fass has been heard at midnight on listener-sponsored WBAI-FM, broadcast out of New York. Long before today’s innovations in social media, Fass utilized the airwaves for mobilization, encouraging luminaries and ordinary listeners to talk openly, taking the program in surprising directions. Radio Unnameable is a visual and aural collage that pulls from Bob Fass’s immense archive of audio, film, photographs, and video that has been sitting dormant until now.

Community Media in the Social Media Age

What: Rep Jeffries recounts the past year’s successes and outlines his goals for the coming year.
Book Launch: Samantha Hunt presents “Mr. Splitfoot”
When: Thursday, January 21 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Samantha Hunt’s previous novels The Seas and The Invention of Everything Else won her the National Book Foundations Five Under Thirty-Five Award, among other accolades, and marked her as a writer of great promise. Her new novel Mr. Splitfoot, an IndieNext Pick already receiving tremendous praise, makes good on her previous acclaim, with a mesmerizing contemporary gothic tale. The novel tracks two women — Ruth (a scam-artist foster kid), and, decades later, Cora (her pregnant niece) — as they march, each in her own time, toward a mysterious reckoning. Hunt talks about the book with beloved author and editor Ed Park, executive editor at Penguin Press and author of the novel Personal Days, at this launch event.
