What: New York fiction writer and poet Amy Gottlieb explores the hidden boundaries of desire, marriage and faith in her debut novel The Beautiful Possible. A moving postwar love triangle set in New York, Berkeley and Jerusalem, the novel tells the story of two friends — an atheist and a rabbinical student — and the rabbi’s wife, as they navigate their deep connection and separate crises of faith. The book has been highly praised by critics and fellow authors; Meg Wolitzer calls it “a deeply felt and evocative novel that draws on history, memory, all the senses, and the author’s own considerable conjuring skills. Alive with characters and unafraid to examine ambiguous emotional complexities, this is a moving debut.” Gottlieb talks about her work at Greenlight with author and editor Anna Solomon, who also writes about conflicted love and Jewish experiences in her novel The Little Bride, as well as her forthcoming novel Leaving Lucy Pear.
