Things To Do In Southern Brooklyn: Mermaid Parade, Cyclones Opening Day, Friday Fireworks

There is no denying summer is in full swing. Not only do the Cyclones kick off their season and the Friday fireworks return this week, the annual Mermaid Parade will also be filling up Coney Island with even more colorful characters than usual. There are also lots of other great community events to check out.

62nd Precinct Community Council Meeting
When: Tuesday, June 14, 7:30pm
Where: Saint Finbar Scanlan Center, 1839 Bath Avenue
What: Meet with the precinct’s top officers and share concerns about crime and safety in the neighborhood. Awards will also be given to FDNY and BVAS members who helped save the life of a patient during winter storm Jonas.

Short-Form Video Techniques
When: Wednesday, June 15, 3 – 5pm
Where: Coney Island Library, 1901 Mermaid Avenue (Near West 19th Street)
What: Learn how to use for mobile device to make compelling videos in this class by BRIC. The class will also cover scriptwriting, storyboarding, frame composition, and how to get the best audio and lighting. You’ll also learn to use the editing software program Movie Maker.

Carnival and Bike Etching
When: Wednesday, June 15, 4pm
Where: Avenue P and Bedford Avenue
What: Flatbush Shomrim, with support from Senator Simcha Felder and Councilman Chaim Deutsch, is holding their annual outdoor carnival. There will be carnival rides, including rock climbing and a 30-foot slide, as well as food and raffle prizes. You can also pick up bike helmets, reflectors, and you can get you bike engraved with a serial number to help NYPD return it to you if it’s stolen.

Manhattan Beach Community Group Meeting
When: Wednesday, June 15, 7:30pm
Where: PS 195, 131 Irwin Street (Near Hampton Avenue)
What: A Con Edison representative will be speaking about power outages and brown outs in the area. There will also be a discussion about Vision Zero projects in the area and an intitiative to replace trees damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

Madison-Marine-Homecrest Civic Association Meeting
When: Thursday, May 19, 7:30pm
Where: Carmine Carro Community Center, Fillmore Avenue, between Madison Place & Marine Parkway.
What: There will be reports from elected officials about neighborhood issues and news, as well as an announcment about the Mary Powell Awards for students at Cunningham JHS and Marine Park JHS.

Cyclones Opening Day
When: Friday, June 17, 7pm
Where: MCU Park, 904 Surf Avenue, near West 17th Street
What: he Cyclones open their 2016 season against the cross-bridge rival Staten Island Yankees. Stick around after the game and enjoy a fireworks spectacular that will light up the night sky.

Coney Island Friday Night Fireworks
When: Friday, June 17, 9:30 – 10:30pm
Where: Coney Island Boardwalk, between West 10th Street and West 15th Street
What: Coney Island kicks of the first of weekly fireworks through the beginning of August.

34th Annual Mermaid Parade
When: Saturday, June 18, 1pm
Where: Parade starts at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue
What: Join in this annual celebration that captures the spirit of Coney Island. The parade highlights Coney Island Pageantry based on a century of many Coney parades.

Where: James Madison High School, 3787 Bedford Avenue
