The Kensington Stewards Bring Free Yoga Classes To Avenue C Plaza

KENSINGTON – In an effort to attract more neighbors to the Avenue C Plaza, The Kensington Stewards launched a six-week series of free outdoor yoga classes at the public space.

For the past three Monday evenings, white tents have been set up at the plaza for locals to practice sun salutations and warrior poses during hour-long sessions led by a yoga instructor.

“One of The Kensington Stewards’ goals was to introduce more adults to the Avenue C Plaza. So far it’s working,” said Jole Carliner of The Kensington Stewards. “A cross section of Kensingtonian, male and female, old and young, new English-speakers and native, have turned out Monday evenings for the class and felt the F train’s rumble as they lay on their yoga mats in Savasana (the corpse pose).”

The summer program was made possible by a grant from the Citizens Committee For New York City and support from Bend & Bloom Yoga and Arts & Democracy.

The free classes started July 9 and will continue on Monday evenings through August 13. Participants can bring their own yoga mat or email avecplazabk@gmail.com to reserve one of 25 available mats.

The Kensington Stewards work to unify and beautify the neighborhood and campaigned for years for public space in the area. Their efforts helped to transform the triangle at Avenue C and McDonald Avenue into an outdoor community space replete with moveable furniture and planters. The group has been managing and overseeing the programming at the Avenue C Plaza since its debut in 2016.

There are three more free Monday evening yoga classes scheduled for the summer: July 30, August 6, and August 13. Classes take place from 7pm to 8pm at the Avenue C Plaza (at McDonald Avenue). RSVP at avecplazabk@gmail.com or click here for more info. Namaste.
