The Day: Tree Pruning at Fort Greene Park Tennis Courts and New Myrtle Avenue Businesses
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
The National Weather Service predicts a sunny day today with highs in the lower 70s. But it’ll be a cool night, with lows in the mid-50s, so don’t forget a jacket if you take a stroll after dark. With fall beginning on Sunday, we’re wondering about your favorite autumn activities in the nabe, locals. Email us or let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to post photos to The Nabe’s Flickr group.
- The city’s Parks Department said that it would prune some trees at the Fort Greene Park Tennis Courts beginning today at 11 a.m., according to Michael Brownstein, the president of the Fort Greene Tennis Association. As a result, a portion of the courts will be unavailable for use today, Brownstein said. The association had lobbied for the pruning for about a year, Brownstein said. This isn’t the only upcoming improvement at the courts: A new storage shed will arrive on Sept. 24, according to Brownstein. The upcoming repairs follow an early summer resurfacing project at the courts, filling in cracks and fissures that have gradually developed over the last 19 years. Brownstein told The Nabe he hoped the project, completely funded by local tennis players, would spark the city to fund other improvements at the courts.
- Myrtle Minutes reported that four new businesses are opening on Myrtle Avenue: Corkscrew Wines at 489 Myrtle Avenue between Hall and Ryerson Streets, which will provide estate-bottled wines from family-run wineries and female wine makers; Lgeoo Electronics at 353 Myrtle Avenue between Adelphi Street and Carlton Avenue, which will carry electronics including televisions, iPods, cameras, notebooks and computers; Peck’s Homemade Delicacies, at 455 Myrtle Avenue between Washington and Waverly Avenues, a fresh, prepared foods business; and Humo Smokehouse, at 336 Myrtle Avenue between Carlton and Washington Park, a new northern Spain-style barbecue restaurant.
- The Pratt Area Community Council will host a free personal finance course for three Wednesdays next month – Oct. 2, 9 and 16. Among other topics, the course will cover money management, increasing one’s credit score and preventing identity theft. The course will be held at the council’s community room – 226 Lefferts Place at the corner of Franklin Avenue – from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. You must register beforehand by emailing charrisse_smith@prattarea.org or calling (718) 783-3549 extension 315.
