The Day: A BAM Film, a Kids’ Music Program and a Cajun Folklore Performance

Dog walkers are out and about in the nabe this summer. Where is your favorite place to walk your dog? (Photo by Francisco Daum)

Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

It was a sweltering weekend, but that didn’t stop some of you from taking your dogs out for a stroll. Maybe you brought your canine friend to the Doggy Portrait Day at the Fort Greene Park Greenmarket on Saturday? If you got a pet portrait or have taken other cool photos, share your shots with your neighbors by posting them to our Flickr group.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the high 80s today – still a hot day, but a bit cooler than the weekend’s heat wave. Thunderstorms are likely today and for the rest of the week, so don’t forget your umbrella, locals.

In the mood for a film tonight? The Brooklyn Academy of Music Rose Cinemas is showing “Edge of this City,” a 1957 film directed by Martin Ritt which tells the story of any army deserter who befriends a black railway worker while laboring in lower Manhattan’s dockyards. Showtimes are 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. General admission is $13, $8 for BAM Club members and $9 for students and seniors.
  • If you’re still looking for summer activities for your kids, Music Together, an internationally acclaimed early childhood education program for newborns to 5-year-olds, is available in the nabe. The program offers 45-minute weekly classes allowing children to learn new songs and play along on bells, drums, rhythm shakers and other instruments. Both mixed ages and babies only classes are offered through the program. Summer semester begins in mid-July, but you can sign your child up for one of this week’s $20 trial classes, which begin today and end on Saturday. If you’re interested, email brooklynmusictogether@gmail.com with your name, your child’s name and birthdate and the class day and time you prefer. In Fort Greene, classes are offered at 138 South Oxford Street off Hanson Place, and in Clinton Hill, classes are held at JACK, 505 1/2 Waverly Avenue between Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue.
  • Long Island University Brooklyn’s Kumble Theater will show the world premiere of Racine D’or, an original theatrical presentation inspired by Cajun folklore, on Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. Presented by Movement Workshop Group and four-time Grammy nominee Cedric Watson, the performance is rooted in Cajun culture stories and the diversity of Louisiana. It will combine contemporary dance theater with traditional Zydeco music, and include a mix of Louisiana Creole, French and American folk and blues. Tickets start at $20.
