The 66th Precinct Reports An Uptick In Burglaries Near Ocean Parkway
Last night at the 66 Precinct Community Council meeting the commander, Captain Kenneth M. Quick, announced that In the past 28 days there has been a surge in Kensington burglaries. And at the Albemarle Neighborhood Association meeting last night an NYPD officer reported that in the entire 66 Pct there have been as many as 28 in 27 days, a Facebook poster said.
“A rash of people are committing these, not just one guy,” the poster amplified, “on unlocked windows, pushed in air conditioners, weak door and window locks.”
Captain Quick said burglars are entering through fire escape windows in the Ocean Parkway area from Ditmas Avenue to Ft. Hamilton Parkway. Posting on the Kensington Facebook page, an Ocean Parkway resident near Avenue C wrote that a 6th floor apartment in her building, not adjacent to the fire escape, was burgled last weekend. The perp opened the top half of a window, perhaps gaining access from the roof.
On its Twitter page, the 66 Precinct asks for help in finding a burglary suspect. The Precinct also strongly encourages calling 911 if you see any suspicious people in backyards, on fire escapes, and/or carrying a pillow case which might contain stolen goods. In Captain Quick’s view, it is better to have an excess of tips that don’t pan out than none at all.
Moreover to keep your quarters secure, Captain Quick recommends reinforcing your window locks by putting a wooden brace in your fire escape windows to jam them shut. This can be done with a 2×4 wood stud wedged in between the closed window panels.
