Striking Workers Land A Contract With Local Car Wash

More than four months after workers began protesting a local car wash over alleged unpaid wages, a contract has been signed to provide higher pay and better employee protections.

Workers at the Vegas Auto Spa (555 7th Avenue at 19th Street) first brought a lawsuit against owner Marat Leshehinsky this past fall, saying $600,000 is due to make up for not paying minimum wage or overtime. As part of the agreement, the lawsuit has been settled.

The Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union reports that contract will run for two years and includes two wage increases and paid time off, plus fair sharing of hours and overtime and worker protections including a grievance procedure. Additionally, the workers will receive a $1,500 signing bonus.

“Congratulations to the brave carwasheros of Vegas Auto Spa, who have finally secured a fair contract in their fight for better working conditions,” Councilmember Brad Lander said in a statement. A supporter of the workers, he was arrested for civil disobedience during a protest at the car wash last month along with Councilmember Carlos Mencha.

“I’m proud to have been a part of this effort, and to be part of a community that worked hard on their behalf,” Lander continued. “When workers stand up for better treatment, their actions have echo effects that stretch far beyond their shop. With this new contract secured, I’ll be proud to take my car to Vegas Auto Spa, and show that I support businesses that do what is right for their workers. I plan on getting my spring carwash done at Vegas Auto Spa, and I hope all of Park Slope will join me.”

The striking employees are scheduled to return to work on Monday.
