Still Time To Enjoy Free Outdoor Movie Screenings In Brooklyn
Summer may be over, but one of the best free city events continues: outdoor movie screenings! To celebrate the Halloween season, a series of spooky (and spoofy) horror movies is scheduled for parks around Brooklyn. Some will be a hoot for the whole family, but others may be more appropriate for older kids and teens — use your best judgement, then grab a thermos of hot cocoa, some fun-sized candy bars, a blanket or two, and enjoy!
Young Frankenstein
When: Friday, October 16, 6:30-8pm
Where: Brooklyn War Memorial in Cadman Plaza Park, Downtown Brooklyn
Rated: PG for some sexual innuendo and mild violence and obscenities.
About the film: The classic tale reimagined and featuring the hilarious Gene Wilder as the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein (it’s pronounced “Fronkensteen”). Kids may not get all the jokes, but the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” scene will leave everyone in stitches.
The Addams Family
When: Saturday, October 17, 6:15-8:05pm
Where: Kaiser Park Lawn in Kaiser Park, Coney Island
Rated: PG-13 for language, smoking, sensuality, and bloody comic violence.
About the film: The creepy and kooky comic and television show family hits the big screen in this kid-pleaser, where crooked con artists attempt to fleece them for all they’re worth.
Vampire in Brooklyn
When: Sunday, October 18, 6:15-8pm
Where: St. Johns Recreation Center, 1251 Prospect Place, Crown Heights; this is an Accessible location
Rated: R for strong language and vampire violence.
About the film: Eddie Murphy has surely done better, but if you’ve got a fan of Doctor Doolittle or The Nutty Professor, they might get a kick out of this locally-set vampire tale.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
When: Friday, October 23, 6-7:30pm
Where: Owl’s Head Park, Bay Ridge; this is an Accessible location
Rated: PG-13 for sci-fi/horror violence, language, some sensuality, and brief drug use.
About the film: It’s an alien invasion that a small town doesn’t take seriously — because the aliens look like circus clowns. A twisted tale — not an Oscar-contender, let’s be clear — that older kids may enjoy.
Little Shop of Horrors
When: Saturday, October 24, 6-7:45pm
Where: Myrtle Avenue Lawn in Fort Greene Park
Rated: PG-13 for comic horror violence, substance abuse, language, and sex references.
About the film: A singing plant, a daring hero, a sweet girl, and a demented dentist. Plus, it’s a musical! Fun one for your silly kids.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
When: Friday, October 30, 6-7:45pm
Where: McCarren Park Pool Deck in McCarren Park, Greenpoint; this is an Accessible location.
Rated: R for sexual content, brief nudity, some racy language, and a little violence.
About the film: Let’s do the Time Warp again! If you have a tween or teen who loves musicals and has a taste for quirk, this will be a good one to share with them. Expect some people (maybe you?) to sing (and dance) along!
